I strongly oppose the $95 million expansion of the West County Detention Center. Taxpayer funds should be invested in Contra Costa County and services for our communities.
In a recent poll of Contra Costa voters, half of the 400 participants oppose any expansion of the West County Detention Center and more than half believe that the Contra Costa County Sheriff should not collaborate with Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
At least $25 million of the funding for the West County Detention Center expansion must come from general and reserve funds. These County funds need to go towards community-based human services like rehabilitation and preventative services, to address these disparities and help all who live here.
Contra Costa County data has shown the racial disparities for people of color at every stage of the criminal justice process within the County. Our funds must go towards investment in services for our residents before they end up in jail. The youth, families and workers of our County need services, not cells.
